CLARION RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT - A HEDGE IN INFLATIONARY TIMES

Clarion has performed extremely well in the first quarter and has felt a great amount of interest in its diverse range of products not only with existing customers but also with some exciting new clients.

We've had a number of interesting enquiries from clients seeking innovative print solutions. With our focus on research and development this year, we are truly excited by these opportunities, and aim to bring new and innovative speciality, visual and marking system products to the market first.

 Growth in Gauteng

We have experienced excellent sales growth in our Johannesburg office, through the appointment of our new regional manager, Bruce Johnson who has in turn appointed an exceptional and experienced sales team. Bruce brings a wealth of sales and general management experience gained in the office automation and telecommunications fields to Clarion.

Over the past 15 years he has held several senior positions including sales director for Panasonic and corporate sales manager for MTN. He is a hard-working individual and is currently finalising his Master of Business Administration (MBA) through the University of the Witwatersrand.

Clarion renews contracts with major fleets

Our Cape Town sales team offers strong sales skills, efficiency and professionalism, but most importantly we deliver to a very high standard. Fleet markings remain a huge focus in 2008 and we continue to renew our contracts with the major fleets in the country such as Tiger Brands - Albany, Caltex, Sasol and Parmalat.

These high volume fleet projects require excellent project management skills, which is why we are proud to be associated with the Blue Chip Multi National Fleet Marking programmes across South Africa.

Delivering on time 7 days a week

Our visual graphics division continues to grow enormously with the expansion of our digital offering and our 24-hour, 7-day -a-week print service. On time delivery remains a key focus and is monitored and analysed daily by production

 A puzzling project

King James Advertising Agency in Cape Town approached various printers with what they described as a "nasty, but definitely award-winning job".

Allan Gray wanted to demonstrate on a billboard at Cape Town International airport that "Purpose is nothing without patience" by building a 7000 piece puzzle over a period of a few weeks that would reveal a message as the puzzle grew.

Clarion rose to the challenge and was the only printer able to offer a workable solution. Clarion had to find a substrate that would give the perception of depth, adhere to the billboard backing sheets and be Cape Town weather proof.

The material was printed with the outline and die cut into well over 7000 individual pieces. The entire puzzle was put together to size on our factory floor and the Clarion team then applied and hand cut the vinyl to the puzzle. We are proud to have been involved in this creative first.

 Going Green

Clarion's marking systems division continues to grow on the industrial markings side as well as on the texprint and packaging side and we are committed to making Clarion more environmentally-friendly. Sourcing new inks and substrates locally as well as abroad is proof of this commitment to the green drive.

Exciting new products are currently in production in the texprint division and will be visible in store in the next few months. Be on the lookout for hot and sexy underwear.

 Skills Development and Training

In 2007, Clarion was recognised by the Printing Industry of South Africa as the first screen printing company to register a screen printing apprentice with the MAPPP - SETA. Currently Ricardo Jason and Michael Kleinbooi are on apprenticeship programs.

Furthermore Saliem Koopman, the company's screen printing supervisor received a certificate of practical competence for successfully passing a Recognition of Prior Learning assessment in the trade of screen printing.

But empowerment without equity is form without substance. So Clarion has implemented an Employment Equity Plan from 2007 to 2009. As part of our staff demographic profile revision we have appointed an additional six black employees and two disabled employees.
 HIV/AIDS policy

Clarion has developed an HIV/AIDS Policy and Procedure. We acknowledge the seriousness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and will seek to minimise the social, economic and development consequences to the company and its employees through proactive HIV/AIDS workplace programs.

Making a difference to people's lives

Clarion is spreading opportunity and happiness with its social responsibility programme.

In 2007 Clarion supported the Ethembeni Children Care in Mfuleni and WARMTH, Catholic Welfare and Development's feeding scheme for the poor in Khayelitsha. This year Clarion will contribute a generous monthly amount to these two worthy projects.

In March 2007 Clarion sponsored the Constantia Rotary Golf Day held at Steenberg Golf Club to raise funds for two foetal heart monitors for the Retreat Community Centre. The machines will save the lives of hundreds of babies in distress.

Over Easter, members of the Clarion Social Awareness Committee delivered Easter eggs to the Ethembeni Children's home.

At Christmas a donation of essential toiletries was made to the D.P. Marais Tuberculosis (TB) Hospital in Retreat for use by the poorest of the poor patients undertaking treatment for TB.

Clarion Charity Golf Day to beat drugs and abuse

During 2008 Clarion social responsibility activities will include an annual Golf Day fundraiser with suppliers and clients invited to participate.

The first Clarion Charity Golf Day will be held at Steenberg Golf Club later this year and will raise funds for projects supporting drug rehabilitation and the prevention of abuse of women and children.
